Obituary of Rudolph E. Klare, M.D.

Rudolph E. Klare, M.D., 91 of Eastford, died Saturday, March 7, at the Westview Health Care Center in Dayville. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (Wilder) Klare. They were married February 19, 1944. He was born March 6, 1918, in Maywood, NJ, son of the late Emil and Wilhelmina (Dahmer) Klare. He was a 1953 graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University. He served his residency from 1953 to 1955 at Hartford Hospital. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Navy Hospital Corps. As a Pharmacists Mate he was stationed aboard the USS Wichita serving in the North Atlantic. Later he was assigned to the US Marines Third Division in the Pacific and served as a Navy Corpsman at Iwo Jima. In 1944 while stationed in Guam, he met Dr. David Bates and formed a lifelong friendship. He opened his medical practice in Woodstock in 1955 at his home. In 1978 he established the Woodstock Medical Group with his son Dr. Ronald Klare. In 1955 he joined Day Kimball Hospital as a general practitioner and acted as their first pathologist. He served as chairman of the Day Kimball Hospital's Department of Medicine and he was president of the Windham County Medical Association. He was a Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice. He served as president of the Windham County Heart Association. Dr. Klare retired in 2000, after a rewarding 45-year medical career. He was a long time member of the East Woodstock Congregational Church, and a member of the choir. He was a member of the Pomfret Rod and Gun Club and Eastford American Legion Post 203. He enjoyed fishing and boating locally, and on Long Island Sound. Dr. Klare and his wife traveled around the world and he had a great love for classical music. He leaves his wife Barbara, sons, Dr. Ronald W. Klare and his wife Joy, and Steven W. Klare. He was predeceased by a son Andrew W. Klare. He also leaves his grandchildren, Heather Klare-Arandia and her husband Dr. Jason Arandia, Jennifer Klare, PhD and Whitney Klare. Memorial Services will be held Sunday March 15, at 2:00 PM at the East Woodstock Congregational Church, 220 Woodstock Road, East Woodstock. Burial in Center Cemetery in the Spring with Military Honors.
