Obituary of Carrie Violet Bernier

Carrie Violet Bernier, 88, formerly of Yosemite Valley Road, Dayville, died Friday, September 26, 2008 at the Pierce Memorial Baptist Home in Brooklyn. She was the wife of the late Lawrence "Joe" Bernier, Sr., she was married January 24, 1945 in Norwich, Joe died June 1, 1970. She was born May 18, 1920 in Putnam, daughter of George Fairmont and Carrie Florence (Chase) Chase. She was a long time member of the South Killingly Congregational Church. Carrie grew up on the family farm on Chase Road and was a lifetime resident of the Town of Killingly. Together with her husband, Joe, they farmed a small plot of land on Yosemite Valley Road for many years and sold their crops to local retailers and roadside stands. They owned and operated the River Haven Ice Cream Stand on North Road in Killingly in the late 1960's. Carrie was an avid gardener. She loved all kinds of flowers and plantings. Carrie was known locally for the unique Christmas wreathes she would create and market every year along with all types of floral decor, crocheted afghans and hand sewn doll clothes. She leaves her children, Reverend Lawrence Bernier, Jr. and his wife Annette of W. Warwick, RI; John J. Bernier, Sr. and his wife Ellyn of Killingly and his previous wife, Pamela Frantz of Denver, CO; five grandchildren: John J. Bernier, Jr. and his wife Laurie; Michelle Sangermano and her husband Michael; P. Chase Bernier and his wife Ruth; Gregory Bernier: Christopher Bernier; five great grandchildren; her siblings; June Shekleton of East Killingly; George Chase, Jr. and his wife Josephine of Dland, FL; Frances Shippee and her husband Bud of Thompson; Thelma Roberts of Colbalt;. She was predeceased by her sisters Florence Chase and Patricia Ann Chase. The Funeral Service will be Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at 10:00 AM at the Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam, CT. Burial in Grove Street Cemetery, Putnam. Calling hours Tuesday, September 30, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Smith & Walker Funeral Home. Donations may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N.
