Obituary of Bruce Roberts Valentine
Bruce Roberts Valentine, MD, 91 of Abington, died August 23, 2008 at Westview Health Center in Dayville, beloved husband of Virginia (Mayer) Valentine, of 67 years. Born July 29, 1917 in New York City, son of the late Morris Crawford Valentine II and Elizabeth Conrow Valentine. He was a Graduate of Swarthmore College (1939) and Cornell Medical School (1943). Dr. Valentine was a veteran of WWII serving from 1944-1946 as a physician and Lt. in the US Navy. He served in North Africa, Europe and D-Day. He made 63 crossings of the English Channel tending to wounded. In 1947 he moved to Abington, CT and established the Eliza F. Clark Memorial Center with Dr. John Clark. In 1982 he retired from medical practice. Over the years Dr. Valentine traveled with his wife and family throughout the United States including Alaska, Europe and Africa. During his career he served as Head of Day Kimball Hospital OB/GYN department; President of the Medical Society; President of CT Academy of Family Practice; Delegate to American Academy of Family Practice; School physician for the Pomfret, Eastford, Ashford school systems; Assistant State Medical Examiner; on the committee that founded the Windham Tolland County 4-H Camp; President Abington Social Library and served on Gov. Dempsey's committee to establish the Dempsey Medical School. In addition to his wife he leaves, his son Robert and wife Althea Stickney Valentine of Gibsonia, PA; grandson Eric Valentine and wife Shari Tarleton of Lively, Ontario; great-grandson Cailean Tarleton Valentine; granddaughter Kira Valentine and husband Tommy Ender of Raleigh, NC; great-granddaughter Zoe and great-grandson Zane Ender, daughter Mary and husband Ken Feathers of Storrs, CT, grandson Andrew Feathers of Charlottesville, VA, grandson Stephen Feathers of Wooster, OH. He was predeceased by two brothers, Morris C. and George W. Valentine. A Memorial Service will be September 6th, (Saturday) at 2:00 PM at the Abington Congregational Church, Route 659 Hampton Road, Abington. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Windham Tolland County 4-H Camp, 326 Taft Pond Road, Pomfret Center, CT 06259 or Abington Social Library, 536 Hampton Road, Abington, CT 06230.
