Obituary of Francis Martin, MD

Francis Martin, MD, age 90, of Sunrise Drive, Woodstock, formerly of Mansfield, died Saturday at Westview Nursing Care in Dayville. He was the husband the late LaRue B. Martin, she died in 2003.Born February 1, 1916 in Philipsburg, NJ, son of the late Fredrick and Leda ( Wildrick) Martin. He received his BS Degree from the Muhlenberg College in Muhlenberg, PA and his MD degree from Yale University in 1941 graduating 1st in his class. He served as a Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy during World War Two and as a Flight Surgeon. He was honorably discharged in 1947. After returning home he had medical practices in New Jersey and Pennsylvania for several years. He served his residency in Charity Hospital in New Orleans. In 1961 he became the Chief Medical Officer of the Mansfield Training School in Mansfield, retiring in 1975. He also served as a Medical Officer at Elwyn Training School in Pennsylvania from 1953 to 1958. He made his home in Woodstock since 1975. He leaves four sons: James Martin of Ashford; Christopher Martin of South Carolina; Samuel Martin of Warwick, RI; Geoffrey Martin of Maui, HI; a daughter: Nancy Jinot of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren. Funeral services will be private, burial with Military Honors in Elmvale Cemetery, Woodstock. Smith & Walker Funeral Home, Putnam, CT is directing arrangements.
