Obituary of Albert F. Washburn, Sr.

Albert F. Washburn, Sr., 86, of Wolf Den Road, Pomfret Center, passed away quietly Tuesday at the Day Kimball Hospital, Putnam. He was the beloved husband of the late Ena (Schiavone) Washburn. They were married November 27, 1941, she died June 12, 2001. He was born July 4, 1919 in South Windsor, one of four sons of the late Raymond and Grace (Evans) Washburn. He and his wife, Ena, owned and operated Washburns This N That Antique Shop in Pomfret. He worked for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, retiring in 1981 to begin his next career by opening the antique shop. He graduated from East Hartford High School in 1938. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Navy Sea Bees in the Pacific. In 1963 he founded the Pomfret Junior League baseball team, then called the Pomfret Ponies, which was generously sponsored by Mrs. Elizabeth Love. The team won the championship their first year, showing all that it could be done. He leaves his four children; Gail Miller Brooks, Nina Benway, Albert (Alby) Washburn II, Terry Washburn, a brother; David Washburn, five grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren.
